As a trusted clerk in Milwaukee, his world is one of Teutonic order until he is tasked with transporting a fortune in securities to Chicago. This journey into the urban sprawl becomes a descent into a moral abyss when he falls prey to a seductive grifter and her accomplice. A night of uncharacteristic indulgence leads to a violent struggle on a train track, resulting in a death that the world attributes to Schiller himself. Stripped of his name, his honor, and his place in society, Schiller chooses to remain a ghost rather than return in disgrace.
