9.2
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens	(1922)

Overview

Production co: Jofa-Atelier Berlin-Johannisthal, Prana-Film GmbH

95 min 4 March 1922 (Berlin) (Germany)

Library synopsis: [En] This unparalleled masterpiece offers a fairly straightforward adaption of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. However, Stoker’s estate was displeased with the unauthorized use of the novel and sued the German producers. Murnau’s inspired editing, framing, lighting, distorting relations of space and time and his direction of the weirdly jerky figure of Count Orlok (allegedly played by Schreck). All combine to make the film the perfect illustration of Jean Cocteau’s dictum that cinema is the registration of Death at work. Written by Phil Hardy

Director: F.W. Murnau

Cult stars: Max Schreck, Gustav von Wangenheim, Greta Schröder, Alexander Granach

Cult relevance index: 9.1 / 10

Note:  Max Schreck, the actor who played Graf Orlok, appears out of make-up in Knock’s office early in the movie.  |  Still, after 85 years, virtually all of the exteriors are left intact in the cities of Wismar and Lubeck.  |  All known prints and negatives were destroyed under the terms of settlement of a lawsuit by Bram Stoker’s widow. However, the film would subsequently surface in other countries.  |  The character of Nosferatu is only seen on screen for a bit less than nine minutes in total throughout the whole film.  |  Filmed between August and October 1921.  |  Featured in Vem var Dracula? (1975), In Search of…: Dracula (1977) (TV Episode).  |  Version of Drakula halála (1921), Dracula (1931), Drácula (1931), Dracula (1958), Zinda Laash (1967), El conde Dracula (1970), Blacula (1972), Dracula (1972) (TV Movie), Dracula (1974) (TV Movie), Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (1979), Dracula (1979), Dracula (1980) (TV Movie), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992).
