The Pinch Hitter Synopsis
Joel Martin, a shy and diffident New Englander, goes to college, where he becomes the victim of rough hazing and practical jokes by the upperclassmen. Joel is allowed no spending money by his uncle and becomes known as a tightwad. He falls in love with Abby Nettleton, a waitress in the college beanery, and she encourages him to try out for the college baseball team. Joel makes the team, but he does not realize that he has been given a number and a uniform only because the coach thinks that he will make a good team mascot. During a crucial game, no other players are available, and Joel is put in as a pinch hitter. He hits a home run, wins the game for his team, and becomes the campus hero.
Children of the Feud Synopsis
Mountaineer Pap Clayton has promised his daughter Sairy Ann (Dorothy Gish) to his cousin Jed Martin, but Sairy Ann loves Dr. Richard Cavanagh (Sam DeGrasse), the son of Judge Lee Cavanagh. In the midst of a feud between the Claytons and the Jacksons, a jealous Jed sets out to kill Richard. Jed shoots a deputy who gets in his way and is taken before Judge Cavanagh, whom the Claytons have threatened to kill if Jed is convicted. The Claytons are true to their word when Cavanagh finds him guilty, and Richard immediately vows to kill Jed, who has escaped. Sairy Ann, however, reminds Richard that he has railed against family feuding and has said that only the law can take a life. A sobered Richard captures Jed and hands him over to authorities; then, after he has forgiven the Claytons, he and Sairy Ann become engaged.
"The Pinch Hitter" holds a slight edge in general audience appreciation, but "Children of the Feud" offers its own unique cult appeal.
