Biography
Southwark, 1876: the year A.E. Coleby entered the world, and the London borough gained the architect of its earliest screen fantasies. Behind the camera he turned a bailiff’s routine knock into the comic sprint of Serving a Summons (1907), sent audiences scrambling for a Tudor rebel in A Traitor to the King (1908), then—two decades later—unveiled the intimate tragedy Unto Each Other (1929) just as talkies began to roar. On 15 July 1930, Westminster closed his final reel, but the flicker he started in Southwark still dances across the archive.
