Biography
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, greeted Caryl S. Fleming on 13 October 1890, and by 1914 he was already facing down cameras for *Beating Back*. Five years later he stepped behind them, guiding *The Clouded Name* through its murky melodrama, and in 1923 he steered *The Valley of Lost Souls* into the last flickers of the silent era. Fifty summers later, on 2 September 1940, the lights dimmed for good in Beverly Hills, California, closing the curtain on a life spent between the glare of spotlights and the hush of shadowed sets.
