Biography
January 29, 1875, New York City greeted its newest resident: Cecil Spooner, who would grow up to command both stage and screen. By 1909 she had stepped behind the camera to steer Hansel and Gretel and The Prince and the Pauper, then traded the director’s chair for the spotlight in 1914’s Nell of the Circus. Off-screen, she shared her life with playwright-producer Charles E. Blaney. On May 13, 1953, the curtain closed for the last time in Sherman Oaks, California, closing a 78-year performance rich with greasepaint and celluloid.
