Biography
Born in the salt-scented port town of New Bern, North Carolina, on 29 January 1870, Charles L. Gaskill traded Carolina breezes for the flickering glow of early cinema. Behind the camera he conjured exotic daydreams—A Sister to Carmen (1913), A Princess of Bagdad (1913), and the hypnotic The Strange Story of Sylvia Gray (1914)—then stepped in front of life’s lens to wed first leading-lady Helen Gardner and, later, Virginia Archer Waldrop-Gaskill. The final curtain fell in Los Angeles on 9 December 1943, closing a life scripted in shadow and light.
