Biography

London’s Blackheath welcomed Ernest G. Batley on 23 February 1874, and the curtain rose on a life spent both in front of and behind the camera. Between the clatter of Edwardian hand-cranked cameras he shaped three brisk crime capers in a single year—The Tattooed Will, The Master Crook Outwitted by a Child, and The Master Crook Turns Detective—all 1914 releases that let audiences watch him chase shadows across the flickering screen. Off-set he shared his life with two leading ladies: first Nancy Bevington, later Ethyle Batley. The final fade-out came on 20 February 1955 in the seaside quiet of Bournemouth, England, closing a story that had begun eighty-one years and one day earlier.
