Biography

Before carving a niche in early cinema, Fred Mace honed his skills as a dentist in Erie, Pennsylvania, a profession he eventually set aside to dabble in stage stock work, notably under the wing of Mack Sennett. His ambition soon drew him westward, where he collaborated with industry titans Carl Laemmle and Thomas H. Ince, only to eventually find his way back to Sennett's burgeoning studio. His star truly ascended as the bumbling yet beloved Chief of the Keystone Kops. Riding this wave of popularity, Mace departed Sennett's employ to launch his own venture, envisioning a series of films built around his established "One-Round O'Brien" persona. However, this independent cinematic foray failed to gain traction, leading him to Apollo Films in search of a new creative home. That collaboration, too, proved short-lived and unsuccessful. Undeterred, he once again ventured into self-production, establishing the Fred Mace Feature Film Company. Tragically, this enterprise also faltered and quickly folded, prompting Mace's reluctant return to Sennett's fold. But the magic was gone; his once-bright star had dimmed considerably. Over the subsequent two years, opportunities dwindled, and significant roles became scarce. His final act unfolded tragically in a New York City hotel room, where he was discovered deceased, with a stroke cited as the reported cause.
