Biography

George Siegmann stormed onto the New York scene on 8 February 1882, and by the time the flicker of silent film began to hypnotize audiences he had already sharpened both his acting claws and a director’s eye. D. W. Griffith handed him the mantle of villainy in The Birth of a Nation (1915), a role that froze his glowering silhouette into cinema history; he then swapped musket for sword as one of the swaggering trio in The Three Musketeers (1921) and tested marital mores in Should She Obey? (1917). Off-screen he claimed Maude Darby as his leading lady, and together they rode the roller-coaster of early Hollywood until the ride ended suddenly on 22 June 1928, when Siegmann took his final bow in Hollywood, California.
