Biography

Born under the soot-streaked skies of Wilkes-Barre in March 1862, George W. Lederer swapped Pennsylvania coal dust for the glow of footlights and, later, the flicker of silver nitrate. Between 1915 and 1917 he steered three early screen curiosities—Sunday, The Fight, and the gypsy-tinged Runaway Romany—shaping stories while the medium itself was still learning to speak. Off-set, his leading ladies were real: first Reine Davies, then Jessie Lewis, each marriage a new act in a life already crowded with curtain calls. The final fade-out came on 8 October 1938 in Jackson Heights, Queens, the onetime kid from coal country closing his eyes just across the East River from Broadway’s blaze.
