Biography

Born within earshot of Camden’s river whistles on 11 January 1886, Langdon West grew up with the tang of saltwater in the air and the brand-new hum of movie cameras in his head. By 1914 he had stepped behind the lens, guiding the courtroom comedy *The New Partner* through its brisk reels. A year later he sent two more pictures into the world: the crime shocker *The Ring of the Borgias* and the cautionary romance *Not Wanted*. Off-set he traded vows with Madge E. Campbell, sharing a life as briskly paced as his one-reel thrillers. Forty-seven summers after his birth, West’s final curtain fell in Queens, New York City, on 23 July 1947, leaving behind a slim but indelible strip of celluloid history.
