Biography

Born 5 October 1878 in Maków Podhalanski—then Galicia beneath the Austro-Hungarian crown, today a quiet Polish town—Ryszard Ordynski grew up to master both sides of the camera lens. He steered performances in early talkie Dziesieciu z Pawiaka (1931), conjured screwball intrigue in Palac na kólkach (1932), and, a continent away from home, helped shape the razor-sharp wartime satire To Be or Not to Be (1942). Actor, director, émigré talent—he died 13 August 1953 in Warsaw, leaving behind a filmography that still crackles with energy.
