Biography
Odessa, 25 March 1878: a boy named Sidney M. Goldin steps into a world still ruled by the Tsars, unaware that his camera will one day outrun empires. By 1920 he’s behind the lens in Central Europe, turning the Carpathians into the bittersweet canvas of *Tam na horách*. Two years later he’s coaxing German audiences toward moral cliff-edges with *Führe uns nicht in Versuchung*. Come 1929, he’s traded castles for tenements, giving Broadway’s shadow-side a voice in the brisk, street-smart melodrama *East Side Sadie*. Somewhere between those passport stamps he marries Betty Gärtner, his collaborator and anchor. The final reel fades on 19 September 1937 in New York City, but the frames he spliced together still flicker—immigrant tales, mountain ballads, city grit—proof that Goldin never stopped chasing the next story.
