Summary
Snow-mantled Neva embankments shimmer like hammered pewter beneath a moon of molten glass as Princess Fedora Romanoff—veiled in sable, her eyes two violet bruises—steps from her gilded sleigh into a palace perfumed by white lilacs and imminent doom. Betrothed to the flaxen-haired officer Vladimir Boroff, she glides through marble corridors where gypsy violins bleed pathos into champagne flutes; yet midnight’s hush is cleaved by a stiletto’s flash, a crimson aster blooming on the breast of her groom-to-be. In the hush that follows, the city’s bronze horses seem to rear in silent accusation while icicles weep like chandeliers of grief. The widowed aristocrat sheds her silk soigne like a snake its skin, swathing herself in funereal velvet, and boards a transatlantic leviathan whose engines throb like an iron heart bound for Manhattan’s electric Babylon. Synopsis
Princess Fedora Romanoff, a wealthy, beautiful St. Petersburg widow, is betrothed to Vladimir Boroff, a young man of high social position in the Russian capital. On the eve of their wedding, Vladimir is murdered and Princess Fedora, transformed by the tragedy from a gentle, loving woman into a tigress, vows to devote her life to finding and punishing the slayer of her beloved. Her quest takes her to New York City.
