1.9/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 1.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Herbstmanöver remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for a deep cinematic masterpiece, Herbstmanöver is definitely not it. But if you want to watch old-school German neighbors scream at each other over a *muddy ditch*, you're in the right place. 🚜
This is strictly for people who enjoy light, harmless comedies from the 1930s. If you hate loud brass bands and silly romance, run away now.
The whole plot starts because two grumpy men can't agree on a drainage ditch. They actually go to court over this.
It's amazing how much drama a small town can extract from a bit of dirty water. Honestly, I've had more intense arguments with my roommates over who washed the dishes.
Their is a hilarious courtroom scene where nobody seems to care about actual laws. The judge looks like he'd rather be eating a sausage than listening to these two idiots.
Then the army rolls into town for their autumn maneuvers. This isn't a scary military movie; these soldiers seem to spend 90% of their time flirting and drinking beer.
It reminds me of the sweet, slightly goofy tone of The Littlest Rebel from the same year, just with more schnitzel. Everything is solved with a song and a smile.
Leo Slezak is absolutely the star here, even when he isn't doing much. He has this massive physical presence that makes everyone else in the frame look like cardboard cutouts.
There's this one specific shot where a horse in the background looks directly at the camera. I swear that horse knew the movie was ridiculous. 🐴
The music is incredibly loud. Like, *piercingly* loud, especially during the big dance scene at the end.
Speaking of the dance, the youth of the town organize a ball to fix everything. Because apparently, a good waltz solves legal land disputes.
If you want something heavy and artistic like Mutter Krausens Fahrt ins Glück, look elsewhere. This is just pure, silly distraction.
The ending happens so fast you might miss it if you blink. Suddenly everyone is happy, couples are holding hands, and the ditch is forgotten.
It's a bit messy and the print I watched had terrible contrast, but it made me smile. Sometimes a dumb old movie is exactly what you need on a rainy Sunday.
