3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ochir remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that let you sit in a room for ten minutes without anything happening, then sure. You'll probably dig this. If you need a plot that moves at a brisk clip or characters who explain their motivations, skip it. You will hate it. It's that simple.
I caught Ochir on a rainy Tuesday, which felt like the only way to watch it. It’s got this weird, dusty atmosphere that hangs over everything. It’s not quite a travelogue, but it feels like it’s filmed in places that don't want to be found.
There is a scene near the middle where a character just stares at a wall. I timed it. It goes on forever. It’s not artsy—it’s just a guy, a wall, and the sound of a distant truck. Honestly? I kind of loved it. It’s the kind of choice that makes you realize the director isn't interested in your convenience.
S. Musov plays the lead with this look on his face like he forgot his keys in 1998 and he’s still thinking about it. He doesn't say much. He doesn't really have to. The scenery does the heavy lifting, even if the camera work feels a bit shaky, like the operator was holding their breath.
It reminded me a bit of the pacing in The Courage of Silence, though with way less structure. Where that film had a clear arc, this one just sort of fades away like a campfire running out of wood. There's no big "aha" moment. No final showdown. Just a guy, some dust, and a lot of empty space.
Some parts of this feel like they were shot on a phone, then some other parts look like they were pulled from a much more expensive production. It’s distracting, but in a way that’s actually kind of charming. It feels real. It feels like a project someone actually wanted to make, even if they didn't quite have the tools to pull it off perfectly. 📽️
I think people try too hard to find meaning in every frame. Sometimes a movie is just a mood. This is just a mood. And that’s fine. Just don't go in expecting an epic.
