If you love old Hollywood trivia, you should watch this immediately. If you want a movie with a plot and characters, stay far away from this one.
It is mostly for people who like to pause the screen and say, "Hey, I know that guy!" It feels like finding a dusty box of home movies in an attic. 🎞️
Ralph Staub basically invented the celebrity vlog before the internet existed. He just follows people around with a camera while they try to look natural.
There is a lot of waving. Everyone in 1930 seems to think that waving at the camera is the peak of entertainment.
The film quality is pretty rough in spots. It has that flickering light that makes your eyes feel a little bit itchy after a while.
It is much more interesting than something like His Jonah Day, which feels way more scripted. Here, everything feels accidental and strange.
I noticed one guy in the background who looked like he was having a very intense argument with a sandwich. The camera just ignores him and moves on.
The fashion is the best part. The hats are huge.
Some of the stars look genuinely annoyed to be filmed. You can see it in their eyes for a split second before they force a smile.
It reminds me of the atmosphere in Romance of the Underworld, but without the drama. Just people standing in the sun.
There isn't much to say about the "acting" because nobody is really acting. They are just existing while a camera points at them.
The music is loud and sort of blares over everything else. It doesn't always match what is happening on screen.
It is a bit like a ghost story. All these people are so full of life here, but the world they lived in is totally gone now.
I think I liked it? I'm not sure.
It is definitely better than watching a modern commercial. It has a soul, even if that soul is a bit grainy and disorganized. 🎥
If you have some spare time, give it a look. Just don't expect it to change your life or anything like that.
