7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Old Dark House remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for gothic houses that look like they’re about to slide into a mud pit, then yes, watch it. It’s perfect for a rainy night when you want something that’s genuinely unsettling but also kind of hilarious in a dry, British way.
If you need your horror movies to be non-stop jump scares or high-octane action, you’re gonna be bored. This is a movie about people standing in rooms, looking nervous, and talking to weirdos. It’s not for the restless crowd.
The whole thing feels like a stage play that decided to wander into a swamp. You can tell the house is just a set, but honestly? That just adds to the charm. It’s like a spooky dollhouse where the doors don't quite fit the frames.
Boris Karloff is in this, but he isn’t playing the monster you’re used to. He plays Morgan, the butler who is basically just a very large, very drunk, very sad guy who needs a nap. Every time he shambles into a room, you just want to hand him a sandwich and tell him it’ll be okay.
Then there’s the sister, Rebecca Femm. She is, without a doubt, the most annoying person to have at a dinner party. She keeps going on about the "wickedness" of the world, and you can practically hear the other characters screaming internally. It’s a great performance, honestly. She made me want to leave the room too.
The lighting in this movie is doing some heavy lifting. Those deep, long shadows crawling across the walls? Chef’s kiss. It feels like the house is actively trying to swallow the guests whole. You don’t get that kind of texture in modern digital stuff.
I couldn't help but think about how different this is from something like Road to Rio. One is a romp, and this is a claustrophobic nightmare. It’s wild how movies from that era can be so vastly different in tone. 🌧️
Sometimes the pacing just falls off a cliff. There’s a stretch in the middle where they just sit around and the movie kind of forgets it’s a horror film for a bit. It’s almost too conversational.
But then, someone says something completely unhinged, and you’re back in it. It’s a weird, lopsided little film. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it’s deliciously creepy. Just don't go in expecting a slasher. It’s a character study with a side of murder-mansion vibes. 🕯️
