Biography
Born 16 November 1891 among the pine-scented hills of Carregosa, Aveiro, Abel Pera traded the Atlantic breezes of northern Portugal for the footlights of Rio de Janeiro, carving out a screen persona that flickered across three landmark films: the yearning melodrama *Onde Estás Felicidade?* (1939), the wartime musical romp *Samba em Berlim* (1943), and the carnival-bright comedy *Pintando o Sete* (1960). Fifty-eight summers after leaving his village, he drew his final breath in the city that had become his home, 27 September 1975.
