Biography
Brooklyn welcomed Adele DeGarde on 3 May 1899, and by age ten she was already stealing scenes in And a Little Child Shall Lead Them (1909). A few short years later she lit up the nascent feature screen as the beleaguered heroine of Lights of New York (1916) and matched wits with the law in the 1917 hit Within the Law. Off-screen she took Harris N. Jespersen as her husband, trading studio arc-lights for home fires. The curtain fell on 7 January 1966 in Valley Stream, New York, closing a life that had helped write the first chapters of American film.
