Biography
Gloucester, New Jersey, welcomed A.H. Van Buren on 9 April 1879, and by the late 1920s the lanky young man had traded the Delaware River for klieg lights, slipping seamlessly into the new talkies. Moviegoers remember his weather-beaten charm in F. W. Murnau’s City Girl (1930), his quiet gravity along The River (1928), and the steady stride of his character in Hearts in Dixie (1929). Off-screen he shared life—and a marriage license—with fellow performer Dorothy Bernard. Fifty-eight summers after his first breath, Van Buren’s story ended in Los Angeles on 1 August 1965.
