Biography
A January chill greeted Albert MacQuarrie the day he arrived in San Francisco—8 January 1882—and the city’s restless energy never left him. By his mid-thirties he had swapped the clang of cable cars for klieg lights, turning up in Bound in Morocco (1918) as a swashbuckler dodging danger among minarets, then trading sand for storm clouds in When the Clouds Roll by (1919). His silhouette—tall, angular, eyes that looked like they’d already seen the next plot twist—made him a natural for silent-era adventure. The Viking (1928) sealed the deal, sending him across icy fjords long before CGI could fake the spray. Talkies came, but MacQuarrie’s face had already done the talking; he stepped back, letting the Pacific breezes carry him into quiet retirement. On 17 February 1950, Hollywood—his adopted town—claimed him for good.
