Biography
London welcomed Alfred Hemming on 6 October 1851, and the footlights soon claimed him. Between 1914 and 1916 he slipped into three very different skins: the shadowy choirmaster of *The Mystery of Edwin Drood*, the jilted husband in *A Woman of the World*, and the tormented lover of *The Flame of Passion*. Off-screen he shared his life with actress Mabel Allen; together they crossed the Atlantic, settling in a city that never stops acting—New York. The curtain fell for the last time on 17 December 1942, leaving behind a trio of silent-era gems and a name still whispered in film archives.
