Biography
Zurich, 1876: Alfred Kappeler drew his first breath in a city of clock-towers and lake-mist, then spent the next sixty-nine years trading that Alpine hush for the crackle of studio arc-lights. Between 1917 and 1921 he slipped into three very different skins: a suave casualty of love in An American Widow, a mountain free-spirit in A Nymph of the Foothills, and the dream-dazed Scots boy of Sentimental Tommy. Each role flickered briefly across nickelodeon screens, but the reels outlived their star. On 29 October 1945, while Manhattan roared back to post-war life, Kappeler took his final bow in a quiet hospital room, leaving the city’s neon to keep shining without him.
