Biography

Born within the roar of London’s Thames on 2 June 1879, Alfred Paget sprinted from footlights to film just as cinema itself learned to run. Between 1915 and 1917 he shaped three cornerstones of the silent era: he charged the Alamo ramparts in Martyrs of the Alamo, stitched together the colossal mosaic of Intolerance, and conjured childhood wonder in Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp. When the cameras stopped, Leila Halstead became both his leading lady and lifelong partner. His final curtain fell unexpectedly in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on 8 October 1919, closing a life that had helped write the grammar of the silver screen.
