Biography
Cologne, 17 June 1879: the curtain rose on Alwin Neuß, a restless spirit who traded the Rhine’s fog for the flicker of early German cinema. Within a decade he had slipped behind the lens as naturally as he stepped in front of it, shaping shadows for *Ein Schrei in der Nacht* (1915), igniting match-seller melodrama in *Streichhölzer, kauft Streichhölzer!* (1916), and tracing a woman’s heartbreak across the reels of *Der Weg der Tränen* that same year. Actor, director, phantom of the Weimar screen—Neuß’s final fade-out came in Berlin on 30 October 1935.
