Biography
Chicago greeted Amelie Barleon with its April chill on 1 April 1878, and by the time she stepped onto her first set she had already traded the Midwestern wind for footlights. Silent-era audiences first met her in the 1910 adaptation of Jane Eyre; nearly a decade later she faced the camera again in The Scar (1919), proving that a single close-up could say more than a reel of intertitles. After the talkies arrived she slipped into the background, only to resurface in 1967 as one of the eccentric patrons swirling through Mel Brooks’s The Producers. Sixty-one years after her first bow, she took her final exit on 17 June 1969 in Jamaica, New York, leaving behind a slim but indelible celluloid trail from the age of silence to the age of satire.
