Biography
A winter’s child of 1887, Andrey Gromov first drew breath in the snow-lit streets of Moscow, Russian Empire. Within a decade he had traded the city’s jingling sleigh-bells for the click of a camera, stepping in front of the lens for the 1910 fantasy *Rusalka* and, a year later, helping to fire the first true Russian epic, *Defense of Sevastopol*. When revolution stirred the air in 1917, he moved behind the camera himself, guiding the brooding drama *Sumerki* through its shadows. The journey ended far from home: on 14 February 1922 the filmmaker closed his eyes for the last time in Riga, Latvia, leaving behind the flickering images that still keep his century-old dreams alive.
