Biography

Born along the Potomac in 1866, Anita Rothe first drew breath in Alexandria, Virginia, yet her story unfolded under klieg lights rather than gas lamps. By 1915 she had stepped before the camera to breathe life into The Fairy and the Waif, and two years later she returned to the screen in Her Sister, sealing her place among the pioneers who learned to act without footlights. Off-set she shared her life—and lines—with fellow performer James Kearney. The final curtain fell on 9 January 1944 in the Bronx, New York, closing a journey that had begun in the candlelit South and ended in the electric hum of a northern metropolis.
