Biography
Born in Sydney on 6 July 1887, Annette Kellerman traded childhood leg braces for the swirl of the sea, becoming a trail-blazing swimmer who parlayed aquatic daring into international stardom. She splashed onto American screens in Jephtah’s Daughter: A Biblical Tragedy (1909), spent 1918 ruling the waves in Queen of the Sea, and by 1924 was still shimmering as the Venus of the South Seas. Off-camera she shared her life with husband James R. Sullivan, and after 88 adventurous years closed her final lap on 5 November 1975 in Southport, Australia.
