At the dawn of Brazilian cinema, when reels were still hand-cranked and screens flickered like candlelight, Antonieta Duarte stepped before the camera and—on 27 September 1914—helped give life to O Crime dos Banhados, a silent thriller shot in the marshes of Rio Grande do Sul. Little else survives of her story, yet that single credit secures her place as one of the first women to appear on Brazil’s silver screen, her image forever preserved in the shadows and light of a century-old nitrate dream.
