Biography
Born beneath the salt-spray skies of Apponaugh, Rhode Island, on 12 August 1881, Arthur Aylesworth slipped naturally into the footlights, trading the hush of a coastal village for the crackle of studio arcs. Between 1936 and 1940 alone, he stamped his wry authority on more than ninety films—slipping from the mischievous sleuth of *The Plot Thickens* to the swaggering crime lord of *King of the Underworld* and, finally, to the weathered Mormon patriarch in *Brigham Young*. Off-screen, he doubled his leading-man roles: first with vaudevillian Sadie Harris, then with the enigmatic Elizabeth, both marriages as brisk and private as a blackout curtain. The final curtain fell in Los Angeles on 26 June 1946, closing a life that had sprinted, cigar in jaw, from New England calm to Hollywood myth.
