Biography

A Middletown, Connecticut cradle rocked Arthur Hoops into the world in 1870, and by 1914 the flickering new art of film had lured him before the camera. In quick succession he breathed life into the king of Such a Little Queen, braved the blood-feud drama of The Song of Hate, and swaggered through the swashbuckling romance of Mistress Nell—all 1915 releases that stamped his square-jawed presence onto silent screens. Off-set, the actor’s heart belonged to Mabel Amber, his wife and most loyal scene partner. The final curtain fell on 16 September 1916, when Hoops died on Long Island, New York, leaving behind a brief but indelible reel of shadows and light.
