Biography
Arthur W. Bates entered the world in 1883 and spent the next eighty-nine years quietly turning celluloid into memory. Between 1915 and 1916 he slipped through three surviving films—The Alster Case, Vultures of Society, and The Phantom Buccaneer—each performance a fleeting silhouette that still flickers in archives today. Long after the projectors cooled, he remained a Chicago man, drawing his last breath in the city on 16 August 1972.
