Biography

Brooklyn, 1893: a lone child, Austin C. Kyle, enters the world beneath the gas-lamps of the Kyle household. By his early twenties he has slipped onto the boards as a repertory rover in Holbrook Blinn’s troupe, then traded greasepaint for nitrate at Metro Film Company, where colleagues rechristen him “Daredevil Jack” for every reckless leap he commits to celluloid. War calls across the Atlantic; in February 1916 he enlists with the 22nd Howitzer Battery, Canadian Field Artillery. Shrapnel finds him that April, ripping him out of the line until 3 October. Barely five weeks after returning, he meets his final curtain in the mud of the Somme.
