Biography
Boston burst into a summer heatwave on 19 July 1898—the same day Belle Bruce arrived in the world, ready to step straight into the footlights. By her late teens she was trading New England cobblestones for klieg lights, slipping into the frame of Salvation Joan and In the Diplomatic Service in 1916 and sealing her place the following year in The Great Secret. Off-screen, she took the name of Charles Pettijohn as her own, and together they wrote a private story no camera ever captured. Sixty-one circuits of the sun later, on 15 June 1960, her final curtain fell in the quiet town of Winsted, Connecticut, but the flicker of her brief, bright career still dances across surviving reels.
