By the flicker of nickelodeon lamps and the roar of twenties soundstages, he carved a career that spanned silents to serials—swaggering through 1942’s Pacific skies in *Don Winslow of the Navy*, braving the Arctic mystique of *She* in 1917, and pacing death-row shadows in *Before I Hang* (1940).
