Biography
October 1888, Kent: a future face of silent cinema entered the world as Bert Gudgeon. By 1915 he was steering fortunes as the ruthless financier in *The Money Master*; a year later he dodged traps and hooded villains through fifteen weekly cliff-hangers of *The Iron Claw*; and in 1920 he stepped into the political whirlwind of *Democracy: The Vision Restored*. The flicker of nickelodeon lamps eventually faded, and on 22 October 1948 the man who once mouthed dialogue in title cards breathed his last in North Bergen, New Jersey.
