Biography
Born in Manchester’s chill on 10 January 1880, Bert Starkey swapped cotton-mill fog for the hiss of arc lights, building a silent-screen career out of pure nerve. Three surviving films carry his ghost: the 1914 mountain-storm melodrama Snowdrift, the 1919 cliff-hanger Bound and Gagged, and the 1920 psychological chiller The Dark Mirror. Two decades later, Los Angeles heat replaced English rain; he died there on 10 June 1939, leaving only flickers of shadow where a leading man once stood.
