Biography

A Battersea boy who first saw daylight on 15 November 1889, Bert Wynne swapped the thrum of south-London streets for the flicker of celluloid. Between clapperboards he shaped three now-silent landmarks: the desert-yearning drama *The Call of the East* (1922), the cotton-mill saga *The Manchester Man* (1920), and the shadow-drenched morality tale *The Town of Crooked Ways* (1920). Actor, director—or both at once—he wove his stories, then stepped back into obscurity. Fifty-two years almost to the day after that first November breath, he drew his last in Yeovil, Somerset, on 14 November 1971.
