Biography
Born in 1890 in the shadow of St. Petersburg’s winter palaces, Bertha Kirkstein traded snow-dusted cathedrals for the klieg lights of Fort Lee, New Jersey, just as movies were learning to speak. In 1914 she stepped before the camera for La Belle Russe, a tempestuous romance that cast her as a countess fleeing revolution; the picture’s amber-tinted reels still whisper her name more than a century later.
