Biography

Born among the rolling hills of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on 13 May 1882, Betty Harte first tasted limelight in the flicker of early one-reelers. Between 1910 and 1912 she slipped effortlessly from the deck of A Tale of the Sea to the one-room schoolhouse of The Schoolmaster of Mariposa, then straight into the mayhem of The 'Epidemic' in Paradise Gulch—three quick silents that fixed her forever in the amber of nascent cinema. Off-camera she traded scripts for ink, adding writer to her calling-card long before the talkies arrived. Nearly eight decades later, on 3 January 1965, her final curtain fell in Sunland, California, but the flicker she helped ignite still runs frame by luminous frame.
