Biography
A smoky-eyed brunette who stepped from the stage into flickering silence, Billie Billings first drew breath sometime in the late 1880s. By 1905 she was trading lines under gas-lit marquees; a decade later she swapped footlights for klieg lights and signed with Vitagraph. Between 1915 and 1917 she slipped through at least twenty-five of the studio’s one-reelers and five-reelers—usually the confidante, sometimes the vamp, rarely the bride. Her debut came courtesy of Maurice Costello in *The Heart of Jim Brice*; her crescendo arrived in 1916 when Paul Scardon handed her the Baroness Von Ehrenstein’s diamonds and let her steal *The Redemption of Dave Darcey*. One final curtain fell in 1917 opposite Earle Williams in *Transgression*, where she vanished as Caroline Shrefton and, with the last frame, vanished from every public record.
