Biography
December snow blew across the high plains when Black Elk drew his first breath in 1863 Wyoming. Decades later, the same steady gaze that had watched buffalo migrations stared into a movie camera, lending his presence to the 1914 docudrama *The Indian Wars* and, near the end of his life, to the 1988 short *Yes We Can*. Storyteller on winter nights, silent witness on celluloid, he carried songs and histories until his final sunset on 17 August 1950 at Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota.
