Biography
A Breton girl born in 1885, Blanche Derval traded the Atlantic winds of her native Brittany for the klieg lights of early French cinema. Between 1913 and 1923 she slipped from the imperial intrigue of Le baiser de l'empereur to the wartime suspense of Loyalty (1914) and the exotic espionage of Ziska, la danseuse espionne, weaving a screen persona as fluid as the dances she was trained to perform. After the last reel spun out, she crossed the border to Belgium, where she lived quietly until her final curtain fell in Brussels on 22 August 1973.
