Biography
Bruce Smith entered the world in 1880 and spent the next six decades turning silence into spectacle. Between 1915 and 1919 he slipped into three very different skins: a sailor in the serial adventure *Neal of the Navy*, a mystery-shrouded figure in *Who Is Number One?*, and the scrappy street kid of *Muggsy*. His final curtain fell on 17 December 1942, on the bustling island of Manhattan, the city that had always fed his art.
