Biography
Born in the gas-lamp glow of Kansas City on 30 October 1884, Calvin Thomas stepped onto the stage just as vaudeville was giving way to celluloid. Between hoofing it in regional theatres he slipped into the flickering world of silent pictures, first registering on filmgoers’ retinas as the iron-willed banker in *The Money Master* (1915). Talkies arrived and Thomas kept pace, playing street-wise cops and gruff mentors; sharp-eyed viewers still remember his terse lieutenant in television’s trail-blazing *Man Against Crime* (1949) and the wily promoter in the pre-Code romp *The Build-Up* (1933). Off-screen he shared a quiet life with his wife, Delia, their shared surname a modest mystery the press never solved. His final curtain fell on 26 September 1964 in Caldwell, New Jersey, closing a career that spanned two eras of American entertainment.
