Biography
October 10, 1885, in the Modenese village of Concordia sulla Secchia, a restless boy named Carlo Campogalliani first opened his eyes; by the time they closed forever in Rome on August 10, 1974, those same eyes had surveyed the world from both sides of the movie camera. He began as an actor, but the lens soon pointed the other way, letting him steer epics of muscle and shadow such as Stadio (1934), the pilgrim odyssey La grande luce – Montevergine (1939), and the Albanian-hero adventure Il cavaliere di Kruja (1940). Off-set, he shared his life with leading lady Letizia Quaranta, their partnership as enduring as the flickering images he left behind.
