Biography
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, greeted the arrival of Caryl S. Fleming on 13 October 1890. Before the age of twenty-five he had stepped before the camera, and by the dawn of the 1920s he was coaxing performances from other actors as well. His name flickers across three surviving silents: the 1914 frontier tale *Beating Back*, the 1919 society drama *The Clouded Name*, and the 1923 melodrama *The Valley of Lost Souls*. The final curtain fell for him in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, on 2 September 1940.
